This is the jumper switch which tells the unit if you are going to use the recharging electronic of the unit (as when using rechargeable batteries - "ON") or if you are going to use regular AA batteries - "OFF". The MFJ 259c does use battery power at an alarming rate. If you left the unit on you might get 20 minutes of power out of it. This is because the unit puts out a signal when in use and that eats up batteries. It's the main reason I purchased the MFJ-99c rechargeable batteries and transformer (wall wort).
